About Bhutan

The Kingdom in the sky! bhutan-map

An Overview:  Spread over nearly 15000 square miles of the pristine Himalayas, Bhutan is sandwiched between China in the North and India in the South. The last bastion of Mahayana Buddhism, Bhutan is perhaps the last embodiment illustrating the Creator’s architectural masterpiece.

Guided by dynamic and visionary Monarchs, slowly and steadily Bhutan has caught up with the rest of the world. Adopting “The Middle Path” as her development approach, Bhutan is a blend of the modern and the ancient; one that measures development in terms of Gross National Happiness (GNH). Thanka

A priceless Himalayan jewel, Bhutan houses about 700,000 people living harmoniously with more than 1000 and 5000 species of fauna and flora respectively. A unique identity shaped by her culture, and hospitality as an inbuilt social value people are humble, spiritual, warm and welcoming.

Three main ethnic groups: the Sharchops of the east, Ngalops of the west and the Lhotsampas of the South- make the Bhutanese.

Bhutanese men wear a gho, a long robe tied around the waste by a small belt, known as kera. The woman’s ankle length dress is called kira, which are bright, finely woven fabrics with traditional patterns. The Bhutanese way of life is greatly influenced by religion. 1

Economy: Bhutanese economy is predominantly agrarian, with agriculture and livestock as the mainstay of the economy, especially in rural Bhutan. Forest products industry and mining, also contribute to the Economy. The major revenue generator is hydroelectricity, which is exported to India and Tourism.

Culture:  An ancient dance introduced to Bhutan by the great Indian Saint Guru Padma Sambhava is faithfully preserved. Religious festivals, wherein these extraordinary graceful dances are exhibited, are avenues for social, cultural and religious interactions. The dances convey religious messages and are performed gracefully. The country is also rich in folk music. Jakar Dzong

Architecture:  Castle-like structures called Dzongs, located at very strategic places are architectural wonders. Built as fortresses by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in the 17th century, these are among the finest examples of Bhutanese architecture. Housing large monasteries, these impressive buildings serve as district administrative centres. Chorten or stupa, which are small shrines built originally to house sacred relics, can be seen in all parts of the country.

Sports:  The national sport of Bhutan is archery, which is an avenue for social and cultural integration. Competitions, accompanied by banquets and merry making, are a part of the festivity. A sport for men, archery is played in a ground with two wooden slabs measuring 30 cm in width used as targets and 120 meters apart.4

Government:  United under Sir Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan’s first Monarch on December 17, 1907, Bhutan was a hereditary Monarchy until 2007. In a move that surprised the entire world, the fourth King, relinquished the powers of the Throne, setting the ground for framing Bhutan’s Constitution and holding the first general elections in March 2008. The Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) won the elections in a landslide to form the country’s first democratic government.

Why visit Bhutan:  Why visit Bhutan when you have Bahamas, India and the beaches of Pattaya? Visiting Bhutan means, experiencing and witnessing the world you have read in history books, and you experience this in Serenity and Solitude, because in Bhutan you will find a living and vibrant culture.Takshang
