Once upon a time, Bhutan was known as Menjong; meaning the land of Medicinal Herbs. Even today gbsowarigpa or traditional medicine (TM) is a preferred choice for many. It is also used as an alternative for modern allopathy.
At the National Institute of Traditional Medicines (NITM), Thimphu, you can see traditional medicines manufactured and visit the indigenous hospital. You can see how the whole system functions.
Hot springs in the wild are one of Bhutan’s treasures, especially so for their medicinal value. Locals say that the hot springs prevents diabetes and several other diseases. Most are located away from road ends; a soft trek ranging from half an hour to two hours. And for those who cannot walk, there are ponies available.
For those not interested in the hot springs, we have alternatives. You can experience the same at traditional Bhutanese houses and resorts. Stone bath and baths in water soaked with medicinal herbs will give you an experience you will relish.
