GNH in a nut shell
Bhutan’s fourth hereditary monarch declared in the early eighties that Gross National Happiness (GNH) is more important than Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This statement is based on the principle that happiness is the ultimate desire or goal of all human beings. Moreover GDP does not consider externalities of development like environmental degradation, cultural erosion and internal peace or spiritual enhancements, which are as important as economic growth to be happy and content.
While the world did not take these words of wisdom from a leader of a small and isolated country seriously at the onset, GNH has now spread to all parts of the world. So much so that international symposiums on GNH has been held in countries like Brazil, Thailand and Canada. The world is slowly yet steadily accepting that GNH could be the magic bullet; the answer to all ills that the world is confronted with.
